Defining A Focal Point

Question:  I have a side-hall with a 13×22 living room.  The 6’ opening from the hallway is at one end, the large picture window to the right and 6’ dining room opening to the far left.  I’ve tried the sofa everywhere. What do I do in the two corners to the left and right of the hall opening?  If you make a conversational cluster, what happens in the rest of the room? I’m totally lost.

Answer: First job: divide and conquer!  By this I mean break the generously proportioned room into two smaller spaces.  Because this is the living room, the ideal solution would be to create two seating arrangements, each anchored by a large rug.

As the room has no natural focal point, the best solution is to start in the center and work out.  Two smaller sofas (no more than 82” long) placed back to back with a table between them are often good anchors.  The sofas should be upholstered in the same fabric.

Fill in with a pair of chairs facing each sofa and some sort of table or ottoman in between.  The chairs don’t need to match, but they do need to share something in common, be it a similar upholstery fabric or identical finish treatment.

Don’t overlook lighting.  You will need table or floor lamps, so make sure there’s an outlet within reach.  If not, you may need an electrician to install floor outlets once you’ve finalized your seating plan.

As for the wall area on either side of your openings to both the dining room and hall, look for pieces (tall bookcases, perhaps) that can fill the space while providing function.  For example, a matching pair of chests on either side of the opening to the dining room could provide a nice place to display a pair of floral arrangements or candles.

Sometimes people take it upon themselves to clean up the black mold that they’ve found. However, sometimes after doing this people notice they are much sicker than they were before trying to remove the mold.

It is very dangerous to attempt mold removal without following mold remediation guidelines, which can include containment setup with negative air pressure to avoid contaminating the rest of the home. Without a containment, the mold flys through the air like a dandelion blowing in the wind. Also, after breaking walls, the black mold becomes airborne and this is what causes major issues and sickness.

Household mold for the most part is not visible to the eye except in high concentrations. This is why it is very important to hire a professional mold inspector to assess the situation and to provide you with a plan of action that will not only eliminate the mold growth, but also provide a full report that can help you to ensure that the mold growth does not reoccur.

“Mold killer” products are not advised as a solution to the mold growth. Killing the mold is not removing the mold. When mold is dead it can still produce mycotoxins, which still cause mold allergies and other symptoms.

A Visual Inspection

Inspection includes asking the client questions regarding the history of the home, searching the home for any possible breaches where moisture issues could occur, observing air flow patterns, inspecting windows and HVAC system, inspecting materials used in the building such as under sinks, attics, walls, carpets, flooring, out door siding, flashing, and eaves systems and more.

Air Testing for Mold

If mold has not been found upon the visual inspection process, then the client and inspector may decide to do indoor air mold testing. This will determine the level of indoor mold spore concentrations, provide a list of spore types, and individual levels of concentrations of spore types such as Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, Penicillium and Aspergillus types as well as several others. Minimum of Two samples must be taken, one outside of the building, which is an outdoor control sample to determine the mold types and concentrations in the air, and another in the suspect area of the home. The additional outdoor control sample is also used to determine if there is an indoor mold growth source.

Tape Testing for Mold

Mold growth may occur on the surface of materials. A tape lift is often used for surface sampling by stripping the suspect area surface with specially designed clear tape. The sample is then transferred to a microscope slide and then placed in a sealed tight container and transported to a laboratory for complete analysis.

Swab Testing for Mold

This type of testing is normally done were visible mold is found to determine the type of fungi. The results of this testing will determine if the mold present in this area is toxic or non-toxic. If visible mold is found in more than one location on the property, a swab test must be done at each location. Laboratory results will determine the type of microbial growth that is present.

Small & Large Shed Kits – Prefab & Precut Formats

So you’ve selected your style, size, and options – now it’s time for us to start building your shed kit. All that’s left is to select your kit format. We offer three formats for all our shed kits – prefab, precut or installed.

Prefab shed kits come prefabricated, which means that wall sections, roof sections all come prebuilt – requiring less time and skill to assemble. Depending on where you’re located shipping costs may be slightly higher with prefab shed kits as the final package is larger then precut kits.

Precut shed kits are just that – precut. This means all the material is measured and precut, requiring all the components to be built onsite. Precut shed kits require more skill and time then prefab kits but they cost a little less for us to manufacture and shipping costs are usually lower due to the reduced footprint of the final product.

Installed shed kits are the best way to go if you are in or around the Toronto area. We’ll deliver your shed kit and take care of everything – all you need to worry about is selecting your shed. One of our expert crews will come out to your home or cottage and build your shed, normally in a day or two depending on the complexity of the kit you’ve created.
